Swan Creek Golf Club

Most of the construction work is completed and the opening of the nine hole addition at Swan Creek Golf Club waits only on nature to take its course and for the grass to grow!

The Layout

When Swan Creek Golf Club's new back nine opens later this season, it will certainly prove to be "worth the wait".  Measuring in at 3330 yards, the Jim Spear design wll be breathtaking to say the least.  Here are the hole-by-hole highlights.

Hole Par Yards
#10 4 400
#11 5 520
#12 4 360
#13 3 180
#14 5 600
#15 4 380
#16 4 320
#17 3 170
#18 4 400
Total 36 3330

Two highlights of this nine hole addition stand out.  #14, while plenty long at 600 yards, can be played from the back tees at a whopping 630 yards, making it the longest par 5 in downstate Illinois.   #17, while playing at a mere 170 yards, offers five tee areas at various elevations, giving the hole a completely different look from each  tee.

Beauty. Serenity. A quiet, nature filled setting. Swan Creek Golf Club’s back nine addition has it all. But while the natural setting contributes so greatly to the beauty and serenity of the course, it is by no means an accident that this nine hole addition will be one of Illinois’ and perhaps the midwest’s premier layouts.

Here are just a few facts about SCGC’s addition;

  • At 3330 yards, Swan Creek will play long enough to challenge any golfer of any skill level. Multiple tees, rolling   fairways and greens, as well as water and strategically placed mounds and bunkers will add to the challenge and beauty.
  • The fairways and tees will be a newly designed grass called Declaration. Declaration requires less watering and is more disease resistant and it grows well in colder temperatures. In addition, its lime green color adds a striking contrast to the color of the roughs and greens.
  • The greens will be a new variety of Bent Grass called A4. A4 is much more dense than previous strains (1000 plants per square foot) which will make for much faster and truer greens.
  • The greens are built to precise USGA specifications.
  • While the actual cubic yards of dirt moved in the construction phase has not been calculated there is no doubt it was many, many tons. On number 15 alone, 8 feet was clipped of the top of a hill

Swan Creek Golf Club Expansion Underway

Little Swan Lake – Heavy equipment has arrived and dirt is being moved as construction of Swan Creek Golf Club’s nine hole expansion begins. Currently one of the more popular nine hole courses in the area, Swan Creek could be open to play as an 18 hole facility as early as June 2009.

“It’s the culmination of a dream we inherited 13 years ago when we purchased Swan Creek Golf Club”, says club owner Kent Westfall, “We are very excited about the project.”

When the Westfall family purchased Swan Creek Golf Club in 1994 the property included the current nine hole Jim Spear designed layout as well as the property and architectural design for the additional nine holes.

“The original vision for Swan Creek Golf Club included 18 holes,” says Westfall, “We had the land and the basic layout. We just had to tweak it.”

That “tweaking” involved Westfall and his son Kemper, the course superintendent, spending many hours walking the land and studying potential hole layouts.

The result will be stunning. When completed Swan Creek Golf Club will measure approximately 6800 yards from the championship tees. With rolling hills, trees, and winding streams, SCGC will offer beauty and a challenging test of golf to players of all skill levels.

The actual construction phase of Swan Creek’s expansion is being done by Professional Landscaping, Inc. of Wood River, Illinois. Having built over 40 courses throughout Missouri and Illinois since 1980, including a course for PGA Senior player Tom Wargo, Professional Landscaping brings a wealth of experience to the Swan Creek project.

Professional Landscaping’s owner, Bill Lowry, likes what he sees at Swan Creek.

“There’s such a natural and comfortable lay to the land,” says Lowry, “Kent and Kemper laid out the holes as well as any architect could have.”

According to Lowry, the final results will be worth the wait.

“It will be a fun golf course, a challenging course,” he adds.

If the weather cooperates, the current shaping of greens and fairways will give way to irrigation of the layout in mid-summer and seeding by mid-September with the long anticipated opening of the new nine in June 2009.

In addition to the nine hole golf course expansion, Swan Creek Golf Club will include as many as 70 residential building lots scattered throughout the property, all with stunning golf course views and many with views of Little Swan Lake.

Swan Creek Golf Club is located at the west end of Little Swan Lake, just 7 miles west of Avon, Illinois.
